TCO Fishing Report – August 23, 2020

Temperatures on the Truckee River have been rising to the upper 60's and the low 70's on the California side, this means low oxygen levels for the fish mid day. Anglers should please be conscious of limiting time on the water to just the mornings. Carrying a thermometer and calling it a day when the water temps reach 68 will help preserve our wild trout fishery and prevent delayed mortality (when over exhausted fish are unable to recover from being caught and can die up to 1-2 days later). The Nevada side of the river is currently subject to a voluntary closure as temps are not getting cold enough in the mornings to fish ethically at any point in the day.

The Little Truckee between Stampede and Boca reservoirs is our best option for trout in moving water right now as the water remains cold throughout the day here. This small tailwater see its fair share of pressure however and we recommend venturing away from the main runs in search for quieter water and less spooky fish. 6x tippet and size 18 PMD's in both nymphs and dries have been the ticket here as well as some midges, BWO's, and small caddis down to a 20! Now is also a great time to try some higher elevation waters for trout or for lake fishing the warm water species such as bass and carp. Both of which have a their own unique set of challenges and pull like freight trains. Check with the shop for the latest news on what is working best.
