Imagine a tiny, almost invisible fly. That's a midge. When these little guys hatch in huge numbers, it's called a midge hatch. The water can look like it's raining with them! Fish go crazy during a midge hatch because there are so many of these tiny bugs floating on the surface, and the fish can eat them all day long.
Midge hatches can be tricky for fly fishers because the flies are so small. You need very fine tippets and delicate presentations to fool the fish. When you do hook a fish during a midge hatch, it's a special kind of thrill because you're outwitting the fish on their own terms, using tiny flies to imitate these tiny insects.
