August 26, 2022 Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River Region
As the summer begins to wind down, the kids head back to school, days become shorter and the nights cooler. The quieter days here in town have been a nice reprieve from the hustle & bustle days of summer, and now is when you begin to see more of the Truckee community taking advantage of the shoulder season or “local’s summer”.
The beautiful weather recently has been a great surprise when compared to the warm and smokey days of last year, and these cooler nights over the majority of the spring and summer has kept the river in much better shape than we had anticipated earlier in the year. We still have good flows and water temps in the river, the lakes are still fishing well, and warm water species are still very active. Make the most of the next few months, because before you know it, we could start seeing some low and warm water conditions, typical of fall time in the Sierra.

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
The Truckee River continues to have good flows, the temps on the other hand have once again become an issue with warmer days last week. Please continue to carry your thermometers with you and call it a day when temps hit 67-68 degrees. Last week we started to see better numbers of large fish showing up and this trend should continue for the remainder of the summer as long as conditions stay viable. Fish are still holding in medium to fast water speeds, with a handful of fish beginning to move back into slower water. This is a good time to begin to probe different water types, even if for just a few casts. Dry dropper set up’s with large foamy dries and heavy weighted nymphs, euro nymphing or indicator fishing are all solid bets at this point, and first light streamer fishing could move some big fish for the patient angler. The water below the confluence of Boca to the Nevada state line will have the best flows and temps, and this is where we recommend spending the morning. The main bugs at the moment are nocturnal stones in 4-6, caddis pupa in 14-18, PMD’s in 18-20, BWO’s in 18-20 and crawdads.
Little Truckee Fly Fishing Report
The Little Truckee saw a small increase in flows and is currently at 44 CFS. We feel this is still too low to fish and suggest fishing elsewhere during this time.
Local Still Water Fly Fishing
The lakes around the Truckee area have seen fair trout fishing and the best time to target this species will be during the morning hours before surface temps rise. The bass bite remains good at both Stampede and Prosser throughout most of the day, and they can be found using crawdad patterns under the indicator or stripped. The high elevation lakes also continue to fish well for trout and as we count down the days until fall, the window is closing to try and tick off that bucket list lake, so make it happen soon!
Stop by the shop and pick up some flies before you head out this week. And Labor Day weekend is only one week away now, so enjoy this time before it gets busy again.
