August 5, 2022 Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River Region
With the last few days of thunderstorms, we’ve seen a temporary improvement on the local trout fishing. While today will be the last day of unsettled weather, the forecast is calling for the high 70’s through the week, which should keep the water temps viable for longer throughout the day. After countless weeks of hot weather, this is the perfect reprieve for both the fish and the angler, and now is a great time to get out on the water in search of trout!
Look for big browns in pockets of faster moving, colder water this month
Truckee River Fly Fishing Report & Forecast
The flows out of Lake Tahoe continue to drop slowly and as of today they are releasing 210 CFS out of the dam. As the upper river continues to drop, we recommend giving this section a rest and focusing on the canyon where Boca is releasing 149 CFS of cold water from the bottom of the reservoir. Flows in the canyon have stayed very stable for the entire summer and it is holding strong at 500 CFS in Farad, which is great to see in August during a drought year. We expect these cool stormy days this week to keep water temperatures down, especially in the canyon, but still encourage you to focus on the morning window and carry thermometers with you, calling it a day if/when temps hit 68 degrees.
Fishing the canyon area of the Truckee River in Summer
This week has seen some good hatches of PMD’s and caddis as well as increasing activity from the golden stones, which seemed to have made a late appearance this summer. Crawdads are still fishing well, and these are good to dead drift under an indicator, use as an anchor fly for tight lining, or swing as a streamer. Look for fish to still be in riffles and pocket water, although they may be pushed back into slightly slower water than previous weeks as water temps drop a bit. Overcast days and low light morning hours have provided a short window of streamer fishing and this week we saw some nice fish come on small olive sculpin patterns dead drifted with the tight line rig. Odds are this shift in weather will be short lived, so get out and enjoy it while it lasts!

Little Truckee Fly Fishing Report & Forecast
Flows on the Little Truckee remain low, currently hanging at 47 CFS. When the LT gets this low, we have a hard time telling people to fish out here, 50 CFS is where we draw the line. Overall, the main river is in much better shape this week and that’s where we encourage you to fish.
Local Still Water Fly Fishing
Our local lakes will be firing this week with the cool weather, as it only takes a few days of wind and rain to bring surface temps down significantly. Not only will the trout in the lakes respond positively to this but so will the bass. This will also be an excellent week to try and hike up to that lake on your bucket list as daytime temps are cool and the air is free of smoke. If you ever have any questions about a specific body of water in our area, give us a call or stop in the shop, odds are we’ve fished it and can provide some insight before you go.
If you missed our email newsletter this week, be sure to sign up online to receive the mid-week news. In the last email, we focused on lake fishing strategies and featured our new Outcast® rafts that we have in full view at the shop. So sign up for our emails to get more info earlier in the week.
