June 24, 2022 Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee, and nearby lakes
Good flows, cool water and bugs are popping this week. We are happy to see these spring storms really help our otherwise lack luster winter as we enter the first days of summer. It’s tough to tell how long these ideal conditions will last however, and this will probably come down to how warm and dry the dog days of summer will end up being. With yet another rainstorm yesterday continuing the trend of a storm every week or two, this made for an interesting spring to say the least and we will have to wait and see how the summer shapes up, but as of right now conditions are awesome for getting out on the water.
Truckee River Fly Fishing Report & Forecast
The Truckee has seen some explosive hatches in the last week making for some good shots at fish on dries, albeit inconsistent. The overcast days have initiated multiple Green Drake emergences in the afternoons, and the caddis, yellow sallies and PMD’s have been active throughout the day. We are also quickly coming into hopper season, and even though these bugs may not have the same importance on the Truckee as they would in other parts of the states, they can be a fun way to change up your technique when using them with a dry dropper setup.

For the most consistent fishing we still recommend using nymphs either under an indicator or with a tight-line set up. We’ve seen water temps jump up a bit with some 80-degree days last week and in the afternoon yesterday we marked the river at around 57 degrees. These kinds of water temps will move the majority of fish into faster water, so begin to primarily focus your efforts on medium speed riffles, pocket water and the tops of buckets to find trout. With a variety of bugs around, switching up flies to figure out what they’re taking will become important as these fish have seemed to become more fixated on certain emergences at this moment than is typical. The main bugs to have in your fly box in both nymphs and dries will be: green drakes, caddis pupa, golden stones, PMD’s, yellow sallies, and BWO’s as well as terrestrials such as ants and grasshoppers and streamers imitating crawdads or sculpins.

The Little Truckee is currently flow at 125 CFS which is only a slight decrease from last week and all things considered, great flows for this time of year. Angling pressure has become very apparent here and with great flows on the Truckee River and the other various waters in our area we encourage you to do your part by exploring other options as we come into the busiest time of year in the Tahoe Basin. If you do decide to fish out here, try and focus on sections of the river that are less fished and go mid-week, and in the mornings or evenings. As this is a year-round fishery, we feel it’s important to note that these fish never really get a break and to keep this fishery viable for years to come it is up to every angler that fishes here to be mindful of the exponential pressure being put on this water as we see our little town get busier and busier, let’s not see our river get “loved to death”. The bugs here will be green drakes, PMD’s, BWO’s, caddis and midges.

Our local lakes will be a great way to find reprieve from the increasing crowds of the summer and can make for a fun, adventurous day in the backcountry. With the snow fully melted and trails in great shape due to the weekly rain events, filling your backpack up with fishing gear and hitting the trails will be one of the best ways to find solitude when our lakes and rivers in town are a bit too crowded for your liking. There are so many awesome waters around Jackson Meadows, Bowman Lake, Gold Lakes basin, and Desolation Wilderness which will provide, excellent fishing, camping, backpacking, mountain biking and 4-wheeling and most importantly peace and quiet, this is one reason why we love where we live. Please stop in and chat with us about the various options for lake fishing in our area and we are happy to set you up for a fun and successful day exploring the quieter parts of the Sierra Nevada as we are now officially in summer mode.
