October 14, 2022 Fly Fishing Report for Truckee and Pyramid Lake

Rainbow trout release fall fly fishing

We’ve seen yet another week of great weather and good fishing here in the Sierra, but with low water in a lot of areas we encourage you to check flows before you go – or if in doubt, reach out to your local fly shop and ask. The Truckee, Little Truckee and our local lakes are fishing great and there are still a lot of options out there for this time of year.

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report & Forecast

While the flows are really low along the upper river from Lake Tahoe through the town of Truckee, the Little Truckee confluence below Boca Reservoir has remained around 300 CFS, keeping the canyon section flowing well. There is still a wide variety of bugs you can toss this time of year and just in the last week we’ve done well on stoneflies, worms, eggs, BWO’s, PMD’s, midges, crawdads, October caddis pupa as well as smaller caddis. As always, we emphasize a good drift with ample weight over an exact fly selection for best results on the Truckee.

Jeff Sasaki Brown Trout

October has been delivering some amazing brown trout down the canyon. Jeff Sasaki from MAVRK Fly Fishing with a colorful one.

Fish continue to hold in a variety of water types right now, so be sure to be thorough when fishing any given run and fish everything from the slow deep tail outs, riffles, and pocket water to whitewater. If you’ve fished a run with no success, take the time to adjust your weight and depth and fly selection of your set up, give the run a quick rest and try again. The fishing will be good most of the day at this point so don’t worry about getting those sun-up starts, however fishing through the evening can be advantageous as the fish will typically be a little more active during that last hour of light.

Little Truckee River Fly Fishing Report & Forecast

The Little Truckee has been fishing very well and the word seems to be out as this river has seen an increase in anglers over the last few weeks. With the higher than average flows for this time of year we’ve seen great nymph fishing throughout the day and a fairly consistent hatch of BWO’s mid-day. For nymphs we’ve been doing best primarily on baetis in sizes 18-22, and other staples this time of year will be midges in #20-22, and of course worms and eggs. As we come into the height of the brown trout spawn, please continue to keep an eye out for spawning fish and their redds. If you have any questions on what to watch out for, please stop in the shop or give us a call and we are happy to explain.

Due to this being a tailwater, the water temps will not fluctuate quite as much throughout the day, meaning the fish will remain active all day, sunrise to sunset, and often times being either the first one on the water or the last one off the water can give you an advantage out here.

Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing

We’ve had some great reports out of Pyramid once again this week, and the name of the game continues to be jigging heavy streamers 40-60 feet down and locating the bait balls of Tui Chubs. We don’t expect this bite to last too much longer however as these bait balls typically will break up some time in November, so if you have a boat or float tube don’t hesitate on getting out here as we have heard multiple reports of 100+ fish days since the opener. Once the jigging game dies off and we start getting some stormy weather, the shore bite will begin to turn on and usually around mid-December is when we begin to head out on our ladders using the typical streamer and indicator setups.

Hope to see you at the shop soon.
