September 2, 2022 Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River Region

September 2, 2022 Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River Region

This week’s heat wave will make trout fishing slightly more limited, but there are always ways to keep that rod bent. For those looking to beat the heat and the holiday crowds, focus on the morning hours, higher elevation areas (think lakes) and when that heat beats down on you mid-day, make sure to stop for a cold one you very conveniently packed in your cooler. As summer winds down, don’t let another year slip away without ticking a few more spots off your list, stop in, we love sending you off in a new direction in search of fish! For those who want to embrace the heatwave, or just want to sleep in, the carp fishing should be excellent as September is usually one of the better times to target these ditch  missiles!

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

With the hottest weather seen in weeks expected all this week, please limit your time on the Truckee River to early mornings and be sure to keep that thermometer handy. We expect the river to warm quickly this week, especially along sections such as 89-South, down Glenshire Road, and the low flow sections found in Reno. Therefore, we recommend fishing anywhere from the Boca confluence down to the Nevada state line, or in some of the higher flow sections in West Reno area like Verdi, Mogul or Downtown. We’ve been seeing a lot of nice browns around this area lately! The fish have seemed to shift off the bigger stones and craws and focus more on caddis, and mayflies. Keep those fly selections on the small side for these bugs and mix up colors. Clear or white indicators or euro nymphing will be key with the low and clear water right now. The fish were holding in quite a few water types last week, and it’s tough to say whether they will stay in the slower stuff still this week, but if you do fish in this water type be sure to land them quickly and keep your handling to a minimum, these are the ones more susceptible to delayed mortality.

Little Truckee Fly Fishing Report

Another week with low flows out here. We encourage you to keep your fishing here to a minimum to promote a healthy fishery.

Local Lake Fly Fishing

This week’s shift in weather will make kicking around in a float tube sound like a pretty damn good idea. If its trout you’re after, make it a point to drive out the extra 20-30 minutes to a lake at a higher elevation than Truckee, the ones nearby won’t provide much in the way of trout fishing right now, just a great bass bite. The lakes around Jackson Meadows or Gold Lake basin are a great place to start for some drive-to options, and there’s hundreds of others within a short hike, not to mention the limited season lakes such as Henan and Marlette are open this weekend as well, this is the season of lakes. Stop in and let’s talk lake fishing we love getting you geared with the right stuff for the job.

And speaking of gear! We are running a Labor Day Sale this weekend at the shop and have some serious deals going on. These deals will be in shop only and you must stop in to get the details, but believe me, it will be worth it!
