The word of the week... Snow! That's right, we got hit hard with a 48 hour snow storm totaling in over 4 feet here in town. Access on the river will now be limited due to fresh snowfall. The main Truckee River will be fishing well for those adventurous enough to head out in the next few weeks with a slight bump in flows expected and a good break in fishing pressure due to most people opting to hit the slope rather than the river. Fish have been taking attractors such as Pat's Rubber Legs and Trout Retrievers in brown as well as San Juan worms or squirmy worms in red or pink. We are also catching fish on BWO nymphs like Juju Baetis, Micro Mays and on bright days Rainbow Warriors and lighting bugs have been the key, pairing these with a zebra midge has been a consistent way to find fish. We recommend to continue to focus your efforts on the lower section of the river from the Boca confluence to the Nevada state line as this will still have the greatest flows on the entire river and will contain the best holding water during the winter months. Please be safe out there and be aware of your surroundings when fishing after a significant snow storm such as this one.
The Little Truckee River will finally get a reprieve from angling pressure as this access road will be closed due to snow. This will be good for this fishery and will make for better fishing in the spring and summer months. Feel free to call the shop about the latest road conditions out here.
Pyramid Lake has really switched on in the last week as winter conditions take hold here. The fish have been taking a variety of flies and methods and having a rod rigged with sinking line as well as a rod rigged with floating line will be a great way to mix up tactics and see what is working that day. For sinking lines we are seeing good success on the classic bugger beetle approach as well as boobies or streamers fished singularly. Indicator fishing seems to be switching over to midges instead of balanced leeches although its always wise to have some leeches handy in case the small offering isn't doing the job. It is always best to fish on days with wind, overcast, snow, rain or just any inclement weather and if you have the option to plan your outings to the weather this can make for some pretty extraordinary days out here. During these winter months dress accordingly and always bring more layers than you think you need, multiple pairs of gloves and warm drinks and food. It can be a long grueling day and these small preparations can make a huge difference.
