TCO Fishing Report – July 8, 2020

Truckee River: The Truckee is in great shape as water temps are topping out in the mid to low 60’s making for great fishing all day. However, mornings and evenings remain your best bet for consistent action. We recommend nymphing or dry droppers from mornings through mid-day and then switching to caddis dries after the sun sets over the hill until dark. Crayfish are also highly active as they molt and provide an easy meal for those big trout. Nymphing these “dead drift” style has been putting some large fish in the net and should be a top fly choice for the next few weeks. Streamer fishing also remains a solid bet for anglers looking for that big bite! Currently, the flows on The Truckee remain great through town and the fishing pressure is much lighter here making it a good choice for those looking for a quiet afternoon of dry fly fishing. The Glenshire Drive area also has a good amount of water with most of the fish sitting in the “pocket water” making it a good choice for those fishing the euro stick. The lower river from the Boca confluence to Stateline will be the biggest water on the river, which means anglers must fish with a good amount of weight and use long leaders while nymphing. One can also try pounding the banks with sculpin patterns for that large brown or ‘bow! 

Little Truckee: Flows on The Little Truckee remain on the high side and fishing with nymphs or streamers has been the best bet. Due to the Little Truckee being a tailwater fishery the water runs cold and clear here keeping fish active all day. However, due to constant fishing pressure the fish here are well educated and require an extra stealthy presentation, light tippet and an accurate fly selection. For the patient angler, we are seeing some hatches of PMD’s and Yellow Sallies throughout the day and later in the day Caddis come off until dark. Look for fish in a mixture of water here, from the fast water, seams, riffles, pocket water and even the slow tail outs in the evening as the caddis hatches progress. All types of water should be covered for the best chances of success!
