Trout Creek Outfitters Fishing Report – March 12, 2021
As of March 1st all general regulations waters are now open to catch & release fishing from November 16th through the last Friday in April. We have confirmed it with the California DFW this week. Please take the time to review all the other new regulations that went into effect this month as there have been a number of changes. We apologize about the delay in announcing this as we where simply unsure on the wording and did not want to lead anyone astray. The positive for this, we believe, will be it should help spread out angling pressure amongst a number of bodies of water, instead of just the Truckee and the Little Truckee. While we don’t believe this to be a huge win in terms of conservation, it’s a step in the right direction. We will be expanding our Fishing Regulations page on the website or just call the shop if you have questions.
The Truckee River Fishing Report and Forecast
We have seen our first few skwala adults hatching off this week. This makes for a very exciting opportunity to throw large dry flies at willing trout, not a very common thing on the Truckee. Stop on in and check out our skwala nymph and adult selection! Using a dry dropper with a skwala adult and a small bwo nymph or midge pupa will be a great way to find fish in most of our local waters right now and will excel in skinnier water in particular. Indicator fishing using grabbier flies like pat’s rubber legs and worm or egg flies will be another great option for finding fish as we continue to transition into spring. The flows are fantastic on the entire river and we recommend that you explore some of the less common runs of the river in hopes of targeting those fish with their guards down. We have still found the best fishing to be down in the canyon section of the river, from the Boca confluence to the Nevada state line where there is the most regulated flows and rugged access and a lot of walking tends to keep a lot of anglers out. The window of good fishing continues to get wider and on warmer days getting out to the water by 9-10 and fishing until dark can provide a lot of opportunities to find fish.

The Little Truckee River Fishing Report and Forecast
Due to recent snowfall the access on the little Truckee will be limited once again. Only those with 4x4 vehicles and with moderate clearance will be able to get back to the river. Odds are however, within a few days of this report access will open up to as far as the inlet. Please give the shop a call for the latest on road conditions here. Remember to explore the river and don’t overcrowd your fellow anglers.
Pyramid Lake Fishing Report and Forecast
Fishing seems to be on the slow side at Pyramid but we expect that to change in the coming weeks as these fish prepare for their annual spring spawn. April is historically a great month for numbers of fish out there as they move into shallower water and school up when the water warms. If you are planning a trip for here do your best to make it during a storm or at the very least, when it is overcast. The fish are taking most every offering and having multiple set-up’s is always the way to have more consistent action. When fishing the indicator, the majority of fish will come on midges especially when little to no wind is present, but leeches are still very much putting fish in the net and should not be disregarded. If you want to maximize you chance of getting the larger fish, we recommend stripping flies. Buggers, boobys, and beetles have been responsible for catching more large fish this year than anything else and could very well be your ticket to a fish of a lifetime.
