TCO Fishing Report – November 3, 2020

The Truckee River saw a drastic decrease in flows this week and the upper stretch of river along 89 all the way down Glenshire Drive will be very low. Fishing opportunities in this area will be limited and those trying this area should focus their efforts on the few remaining deep runs and riffles for the best success. The best bet for fishing on the Truckee will be from the confluence of Boca Reservoir to the Nevada state line where the flows will be at their highest for the entirety of the river.

As usual, nymphing remains the best way to consistently find fish but streamer fishing has been a good option for those "head hunting" the larger fish in the river. Our first bit of snow is expected this weekend and this cold front should make the Blue Wing Olives active. Anglers fishing during this cold weather should keep an eye out for hatches of these foul weather bugs which can provide some surprisingly good dry fly fishing for those at the right place during the right time. Even if you are not seeing hatches of these bugs we expect BWO nymphs to become the main fare for the trout in the coming weeks. Now is a good time to pick up a good selection of BWO imitations as these will be mainstays from now all the way through late spring. Other bugs we recommend having would be stoneflies, midges, worm patterns and egg patterns.

Please note that the general trout season closure will happen on the 15th of this month which will close the upper half of the Truckee as well as all of our local creeks. There will still be some great year round options here in Truckee throughout the winter on the Lower section of the Truckee River from the Trout Creek confluence to the Nevada state line, and the Little Truckee between Stampede and Boca reservoirs stays open for catch and release fishing with no bait or barbed hooks. The majority of the local lakes also remain open all year and still water fishing will certainly be a good option for the winter months as well. Stop on in and let's chat about winter fishing tactics! Currently the Little Truckee has a good amount of trout spawning and we are recommending to give this fishery a break to minimize human contact with these vulnerable fish and ensure a successful spawn.

Stillwater fishing remains great this week as trout are active all day. With an abundance of lakes in the area including Donner Lake. This is a great way to find both excellent fishing and solitude when the more popular options are a little too crowded for your liking. Streamers, nymphs and dries have all been producing some nice fish. Both shore fishing or getting out on a boat will get you into fish as trout are hanging out higher in the water column throughout the day.

Pyramid Lake opened to fishing this week and as expected lots of double digit fish have already been caught within the first few days of the opener. There seem to already be quite a few fish in shallow as shore anglers did well in the mornings and evenings with a bit of a lull mid-day. Boat fishing was good all day and trollers have been seeing very consistent action as these fish have seen little to no fishing pressure since last spring. We expect shore fishing to improve as soon as this weekend as this small storm front moves its way through the area.
