TCO Fishing Report – October 20, 2020
Fall time in the Truckee/Tahoe is not only one of the prettiest times of year but can also provide some of the best fishing opportunities as well. The beautiful weather as of late should be yet another reason to get outdoors and enjoy some late season fishing. With some mixed rain and snow in the extended forecast we highly encourage you to get out fishing before the weather turns this weekend.
The main (Big) Truckee saw a slight increase in flows in the upper river and fishing this section should be great for the October Caddis hatches happening in the evenings. Now is a good time to explore this overlooked stretch of river before the general season closure happens on November 15th. The lower river has remained steady for anglers using either nymphs or streamers although fishing pressure does remain steady on most of the popular access points. We always recommend looking for quieter water off the beaten path on the Truckee for your best chance at good fishing. The main bugs here will be October Caddis, BWO's, Midges, Stoneflies and egg or worm patterns as a hail mary when all else fails. Streamer fishing continues to improve and most anglers are using sculpin patterns in olive although other colors such as black, white, natural or even yellow have their days!
The Little Truckee remains the best place to see consistent dry fly activity and anglers heading out here should have a good selection of BWO dries and emergers. the hatches seem to be mostly happening mid-day here and when the bugs aren't coming off the best tactic will be nymphing the faster water. we recommend using 6x tippet when fishing these small mayflies for best results. Please be aware that brown trout and Kokanee are actively spawning here and these fish should be avoided at all costs. this includes not fishing to or around them and not wading on their redds to ensure a successful spawn for the next generation of wild fish. If you have any further questions on etiquette for fishing during this time of year please feel free to stop in or give us a call and we'd be happy to talk with you!
