TCO Fishing Report – October 28, 2020
With a good cold front this last week, the trout fishing has been some of the best of the year and should remain excellent through the general trout season closing on November 15th as the extended forecast is calling for mild weather for the next few weeks. the upper part of the Truckee River along 89 south is still seeing some of the highest flows for this time of year in some years and fishing up here has been great using October Caddis, Midges, BWO's as well as worm and eggs patterns. The lower section of the river in the canyon is fishing good as well and with the bigger flows down here anglers should adjust their tactics by using more weight and fishing deeper under the indicator to get their flies in front of these fish. Streamer fishing has been a great way to target those bigger fish and most anglers opt for streamers that imitate smaller baitfish such as sculpin.
The Little Truckee has seen quite a few fish on the spawn this week and we are recommending to fish elsewhere for the next couple of weeks so that these fish can have minimal human interaction during this time. This will be a great time to fish the bodies of water under general regulations before their closures on the 15th of next month.
We are also excited to announce that the Pyramid Lake Piute Tribe announced they moved the opening of Pyramid Lake to Monday, November 2nd. this world class fishery has seen a long break from fisherman and the opener should be nothing short of incredible. As is typical this time of year we expect the fish to be in deeper water and the best way to fish this lake during the fall months would be to get out on some type of water craft and fish deep using a full sink line with streamers. Please use extreme caution when using a boat out here as winds have been known to shift constantly and weather patterns are sporadic at best. Indicator fishing using balanced leeches and midges should be good during the mornings and evenings if you are unable to get out deep and if using this method we recommend finding beaches with good drop offs near shore. always check the weather before you head out! please check out the PLPT facebook page and website for info on licenses and new COVID-19 protocols in effect for Pyramid Lake.
