TCO Fishing Report – October 7, 2020
Fishing on the Big Truckee remains good this week in the canyon section of the the river using either nymphs or streamer fishing. Last weekend was a busy one here in town, but weekdays should provide some solitude on the water with much fewer anglers out and about. The flows still remain low here in town and won't get a significant increase until the confluence of Boca reservoir where they continue to put in about 250 CFS. The main bugs are BWO's, Midges and October Caddis which have now been consistently coming off in the late evenings. This late evening hatch will provide a short window of dry fly fishing on these warm days where hatches are few and far between.

The Little Truckee has been dropped from 85 CFS last week to an astounding 10 CFS within the last few days so there can be an inspection done on stampede dam. This came during the annual migration of the Kokanee and Brown Trout from Boca Reservoir into there spawning grounds along the Little Truckee, the timing could'nt have been much worse on this inspection and we are hoping that these low flows will only last a few more days before they are restored to normal so these wild fish can spawn. This should go without saying but please do not fish here until the water comes back up to its typical flows, these fish will likely remained stressed for days after these flows are restored and fishing here probably won't be good for a week or two. Now is a good time to give this fishery a break.
