TCO Fishing Report – September 7, 2020

With a record breaking heatwave this week and heavy river traffic due a holiday weekend the fish got hit hard.. but worry not as summer is coming to an end and we will now see diminished crowds and cooler temperatures starting as early as this week. Fishing should improve daily from here on out, and fall is arguably the best season to fish in the Sierra. As for this week anglers on the Truckee River should still limit their time on the water to early mornings and call it before 11 or if and when the water temps reach 68 degrees.

The Little Truckee has been fishing exceptional this summer thanks to cold water and above average flows. while we're sure these fish saw quite a few flies drifted in front of them this weekend, this river holds fishing pressure quite well and in a week or so it should bounce right back. We aren't seeing strong hatches on top and using nymphs has been best for both rivers, although having a dry fly rod on the Little Truckee is always wise and often pays off when short hatches of mayflies erupt.

Even local bass have reacted to these warm days and fishing at Prosser and Stampede Lakes for smallmouth has slowed. Persistent anglers are still finding fair fishing around the dams of these lakes using streamers and buggers or fishing crawdad patterns and nymphs under an indicator. Bass fishing will also pick up this fall as they work hard to fatten up for the winter months.
