Truckee River Fly Fishing Report November 6, 2021
This last week has been some of the best fishing we’ve seen in our area in some time. The river, the lakes and even a handful of creeks have all been fishing well after the storm and crowds are light. We have some weak storms in the forecast which should help to prolong these prime conditions and fishing on days with rain and snow can often be some of the best for those willing to make it happen.
Truckee River Fishing Report and Forecast
The river continues to run strong this week and while flows dropped slightly along Glenshire from 350 to 250 CFS, the canyon has been hanging in around 500+ and most stretches are fishing well. The water clarity is still slightly tinted, and this can be a good advantage when it comes to how close you fish and your likelihood of being spotted as well as the strength of tippet that can be used, try using 3x on your nymphs and see if you catch any less fish! We still have been finding fish in some medium fast water, often close to the shoreline, as well as the typical winter holding water like pools and tail-outs. Euro nymphing and indicators have both been working effectively as both methods have their strengths and draw backs on a river of this size. Streamer fishing has been excellent over the last week, and a few anglers report landing multiple 20+ inch fish in a day swinging sculpins. The bugs will remain similar over the next few months and having a good assortment of stoneflies, BWO’s, worms, midges will be important.
Little Truckee Fishing Report and Forecast
The Little Truckee has yet to see the benefit from this last storm and the water master is choosing to fill up Stampede Reservoir, so water here remains low. Despite the flows, the river is still fishing in its typical form, difficult, yet rewarding. There have been some large hatches of BWO’s on some of the cloudier days and on other days still fairly consistent although sometimes short lived. With the low flows, euro nymphing will be tougher here, and using dry droppers will be a great alternative to maintain stealth. Please continue to keep an eye out for any late spawning brown trout and give them plenty of space, if you have any questions on what to look for please give us a call or stop in the shop and we are happy to explain.
Pyramid Lake Fishing Report and Forecast
Pyramid Lake has definitely picked up for shore fishing and the forecast for the next few months is looking great with a lot of big fish already caught since the opener. Fishing beaches with deep drop-off’s will be important right now and be sure to give your flies a long soak when fishing sinking lines. The midge and leech combo has been fishing ok as well but play around with depths. We found fish under the indo this week as deep as 12 feet and as shallow as 7 feet. With the improved shore fishing and the windy days expected this week, you should probably just leave the float tube, pontoon, or kayak at home. We are well stocked in everything you need for a successful day out here from flies and tackle to stripping baskets, thermal layers, gloves and as always some great local information, so stop on by on your way out here!
We also wanted to thank everyone who signed up for our first in-house fly-tying class, we have filled all the spots and won’t be accepting anyone else at this time. This class will be a beginner-oriented class focusing on some must have flies for Pyramid Lake. We will be announcing our next class shortly so stay tuned! I thank each and every one of you for your continued support to Truckee’s only dedicated fly shop, Cheers!
Also – We have some new hoodies and shirts in the shop for our first TRUCKEE TROUT BUM program. We’ve made these shirts with our local Trout Unlimited Chapter to help support our local waters. Proceeds from the sale of this gear will to our Truckee River Fund and TU. Get one!
