Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report November 26, 2021
While the weather this week sure looks great for a day on the water, these dropping flows on the Truckee River has us a little concerned. We could certainly use some precipitation, preferably snow.
Truckee River Fly Fishing Report and Forecast
The Truckee River continues to drop this week and we are seeing flows in the low 200’s down in the canyon and around 130 in Glenshire. Given the low water up in Truckee, we encourage anglers to focus on the lower section of river from Hirschdale down to the west Reno area (Nevada license required). With the bright and sunny days, look for the low light hours to provide the best fishing. The smaller offerings such as BWO’s and midges will be come especially important until we see the river come back up so be sure to stay stocked on the basics such as Zebra Midges and Juju Baetis to name a few, and when the sun is high try flashy bugs such as rainbow warriors or lightning bugs as your top “attractor fly”.
We have noticed the fish migrating back to the slow deep runs and this is where the indicator will really shine as you can fish farther away and adjust your depth and weight on the fly, with the low water however the tight-line nymphing set up will still have its place for now, especially if you’re willing to wade into some deeper or faster water. The streamer bite has not-so-surprisingly slowed down, and it is now mostly a nymphing or even a dry dropper game.
Little Truckee Fly Fishing Report and Forecast
The Little Truckee remains in similar shape over the last few weeks with no change in flows here. At 30 CFS, this river will be more technical than normal and a good fly selection, light tippet, and a delicate presentation will be vital for a successful day here. Look for sporadic hatches of BWO’s and midges throughout the day and be ready with your dry fly rod when they occur as they can often be short lived. Fishing emerger patterns of these bugs will often out-fish the adults here as these fish see their fair share of imitations on any given day. Using 6x or even 7x tippet will be important out here with the low flows, small bugs, and educated fish. Dry dropper set ups with a small parachute pattern and a unweighted nymph such as a WD40 or RS2 can be deadly when the fish are especially on edge like they are now. Look for low light hours to provide a better window of fishing as this is when the trout here are a little less weary and stocking fish becomes a bit easier.
Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Report and Forecast
While this warm weather is not ideal for the fishing here, the cold nights continue to drop the surface temps of the lake and we are seeing the overall conditions improve. The fish are being found closer to shore with regularity now and indicator fishing with leeches has been the name of the game as of late. We have been doing well on a variety of leech colors and black, white, olive and browns are good places to start. The stripping bite seems to have slowed but we still recommend having a stripping rod and a indicator rod set up to be able to mix up presentations as it can vary day to day and even hour to hour. When fishing on a bright and sunny day with calm winds using smaller midge patterns can be best and even try using a hand twist retrieve if the lake surface is glass.
