Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report October 15, 2021
With incredibly low flows on the Truckee River, we are asking those looking to fish in the area to avoid putting any additional pressure on these already stressed fish. Let’s hope that these next few storms drop some serious precipitation and make a dent in these drought conditions so we can once again chase fish on the Truckee soon.
The Little Truckee is in similar shape, hanging in at 30 CFS and should be avoided until flows increase out of stampede and the browns finish up their spawn. The best fishing locally will be found in our local lakes, so don’t put those float tubes away just yet. As we get our first bit of winter weather the surface temperatures on the lakes continue top drop and the trout are reacting positively by sitting higher in the water column and tighter to the shoreline. We definitely have an abundance of lakes in the area and it would be tough to spotlight just one, so stop in the shop or give us a call to discuss your options.
Pyramid Lake has started out strong over the first 2 weeks of the opener and will be one of the best options for fishing locally. Using a float tube or boat with a full sink line will provide more opportunities to get into fish, but caution should be taken during these stormy days as the weather can be very erratic, we highly recommend using a PDF when floating. Surprisingly, shore fishing here has also been good and finding a beach with a good drop-off can get you into some consistent fishing using both full sink lines or with floating lines with indicators. Recent reports indicate that the southern beaches have been fishing best for shore anglers and those getting out on tubes should find consistent fishing on most beaches as long as you can locate drop-off’s as well as the bait balls of tui-chub. Surface temps here are currently in the upper to mid-60’s and as we continue to get some cooler weather in the forecast, we should see fishing here only get better in coming weeks. While it’s still too early to tell, from what we can see this is shaping up to be another stellar year of fishing out on the salty pond, so don’t miss out on your chance at a fish of a lifetime.
On a side note, we are changing our hours starting on Monday, opening at 9am and closing at 6pm eery day. Also, we will be announcing our first fly tying classes of the season soon and it will held after hours, here at our shop. The first class will be focusing on must have flies for Pyramid. We will have limited openings and it will be first come first serve so be sure to get on the list soon to secure your spot.
